A Simple 30-Minute Routine for Multi-Class Teaching

Sample teaching article · Classroom ideas to adapt to your own learners.

When several classes share one room, a short common activity can lead into tasks at different levels. Try this 30-minute routine using a story, a few picture cards and familiar objects.

1. Begin together — 5 minutes

Show a picture of a market. Ask children to name things they can see. Accept answers in their home language, then introduce two or three useful English words.

2. Give each group a clear task — 10 minutes

Class 3: Write five naming words from the picture and draw one object.
Class 4: Write five sentences using describing words.
Class 5: Write a short market dialogue between a customer and a seller.

3. Rotate teacher support — 10 minutes

Work first with the group that needs the most help. Give the other groups an example on the board and a clear finishing task. Let a peer explain the instructions, but check each child’s work yourself.

4. Finish with a quick check — 5 minutes

Ask each child to share or write one answer independently. Note who can name an object, who can write a sentence and who needs another example. Use these notes to plan the next lesson.

Low-cost materials

Use old calendars, hand-drawn pictures, bottle caps and scrap-paper word cards. Choose readable text and familiar pictures.

Try it tomorrow

Prepare three task cards before class. Keep each instruction to one line. Change the difficulty after checking how the children respond.
