The Little Seed
Once there was a tiny seed resting in the soil. ‘I am too small to do anything important,’ it thought. Then rain softened the earth, the sun warmed the ground and the seed began to change.
A Root and a Shoot
First, a little root grew downward to take in water. Soon a green shoot pushed upward toward the light. The seed was surprised: ‘I am growing!’ Day by day, leaves appeared.
A Patient Plant
The young plant wanted to become a tall tree immediately. But growing took time. With enough light, water, air and suitable soil, it continued to develop. The seed learned that small changes can lead to big results.
Try a Seed Experiment
With an adult, place a few soaked beans on damp cotton in a clear container. Keep the cotton moist, not flooded, and place it somewhere suitable with light. Observe daily for about a week. Do not eat the experimental beans.
Your Observation Diary
Draw what you see on Day 1, Day 3, Day 5 and Day 7. Look for a seed coat opening, a root and a shoot. Seeds may grow at different speeds, so write what actually happens rather than what you expected.
Think and Share
Which part appeared first? Why do you think the root grows down? What might happen if the cotton dries out? Tell the story of your own little seed in five sentences.
