Become a Number Detective
Numbers are hiding all around us! You can find them on calendars, clocks, doors, packets and books. Today you will become a number detective and solve clues.
What You Need
Take a pencil, a notebook and ten small pieces of paper. Ask an adult or teacher to write numbers from 1 to 20 on the papers and hide them safely around a room.
Round One: Find and Read
Find a number card, say its number aloud and write it in your notebook. Put the cards in order from smallest to largest. Can you tell which numbers are missing?
Round Two: Solve the Clues
Find a number greater than 8 but smaller than 12. Find an even number between 10 and 16. Find the number that is 2 more than 7. Check your answers: 9, 10 or 11 fit the first clue; 12 or 14 fit the second; and 9 fits the third.
Round Three: Make Your Own Clue
Choose a number and give your friend three hints. For example: ‘I am even. I am greater than 5. I am less than 9.’ The answer is 6 or 8, so add one more clue to make the answer unique!
What Did You Learn?
You practised reading numbers, ordering, comparing, adding and identifying even numbers. Challenge yourself by using numbers up to 50 next time.
