Teacher and children in a classroom

Quick Learning Checks Beyond Marks

Sample teaching article · Practical ideas to adapt to your classroom.

Choose a skill you can observe

A short learning check should answer a clear question. Can the child read a familiar sentence independently? Can they explain a number using tens and ones? Choose one skill rather than trying to assess an entire chapter at once. Write a task that gives the child a chance to show that skill.

Try a one-question exit slip

At the end of a lesson, ask every learner to complete one small task independently. After a nouns lesson, they might write one person, one place and one thing. After a place-value lesson, they could explain the value of the 4 in 243. Keep the task brief enough to review before the next lesson.

Listen to explanations

A correct answer can come from guessing or copying. Ask a few children, “How did you work it out?” Accept an explanation through speech, drawings or objects when that suits the skill. If writing is not the goal, a writing difficulty should not hide what the learner understands.

Use a small observation record

Keep three practical notes: works independently, works with a prompt, or needs another example. Record only the skill you checked and the date. These notes describe the task completed that day; they should not become permanent labels for children.

Change the next lesson

Give children who need support another concrete example and a short guided task. Let learners who are ready apply the skill in a new situation. For example, one group may sort noun cards while another writes sentences containing nouns. Recheck after teaching rather than assuming the first result is final.

Share useful feedback

Tell the child what worked and one next step: “You named the animals correctly. Now add a place word.” Avoid a long list of corrections. A learning check becomes useful when its result changes what you teach and helps the learner see what to practise.
